Rod Oppegard barely stops to stomp snow off his galoshes before entering Highland Lutheran Church near Cummings on North Dakota's eastern border. "Ah-ha," he says, peeking into the sanctuary from the church's entryway. "It looks like a Sarah Kirkeberg Raugland to me." In front of him a freestanding altar frames a painting of Christ on the cross. But before Oppegard examines the painting, he takes off his quilted coat, places the tools of his trade in a pew and prays for God's guidance.
