Turning superheroes into allies

Superhero models of leadership are being tossed out like yesterday's garbage

With the decline of autocratic leadership styles, a new breed of consensus-based leaders has emerged. Take Joanne Negstad, president of Lutheran Services in America, for example.

Both The NonProfit Times and Chronicle of Philanthropy recently named LSA the nation's largest nonprofit organization. Negstad says that in the alphabetical listing of these top organizations' leaders, "I'm listed between Ralph Nader and Colin Powell."

Yet Negstad would be the first to say that her leadership isn't a claim to fame. It's not about what she has done alone. It's not a Superwoman story. It's more about a combination of her decisions, the processes she started and the partnerships she built.
