'This I Believe' exercise

“This I Believe” is a current feature on National Public Radio’s Morning Edition and All Things Considered. People from all walks of life—public figures and ordinary citizens—are invited to tell about the core values and personal philosophies that guide their lives. It’s not unlike what some congregations ask their young people to do before they are confirmed—write a statement of faith to be shared with the congregation.

• Do you remember what you wrote (or what you might have written) at the time of your confirmation?

• What would you include in such an essay if you were to write it today?

• A few years ago every Tuesday during morning prayer at the Chapel of the Resurrection at Valparaiso [Ind.] University, a student or a member of the faculty or staff was invited to talk on the topic “How My Faith Has Changed.” If you were invited to give such a talk, what would you say?
