Liberia's president accepts churches' call
New leader agrees to address widespread corruption

Shortly after Liberia’s presidential elections last November, Lutheran Church in Liberia Bishop Sumoward Harris told President-elect Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf that he hoped her government would see the church as a partner in redirecting the country in a positive direction.

At her Jan. 16 installation in Monrovia, Johnson-Sirleaf said she would accept a call by Harris and other Liberian church leaders for her government to combat corruption in the West African country. Agreeing with the church leaders, she said widespread corruption has indeed hindered rebuilding efforts.
