Prasanna Kumari Samuel, 56, feminist theologian and a former Lutheran World Federation vice president, died March 16 in Chennai, India, of a heart attack. Kumari Samuel was one of the first two Lutheran women ordained 15 years ago in India. She played a key role in the United Evangelical Lutheran Churches of India’s work to help improve the lives of women in slum areas (see "A call for justice"). At the time of her death, Kumari Samuel served as a professor of New Testament and head of women’s studies at Gurukul Lutheran Theological College in Chennai. She was also vice president of the National Council of Churches in India. She had a doctorate of divinity, but was to have received another doctorate in May 2006 from the Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago. The rest of this article is only available to subscribers. |
